The Road Salt Symposium was started in 2001 by Fortin Consulting with the goal of bringing awareness to the road salt dilemma and to bring together public works and environmental organizations to solve this problem. The symposium brings people together to talk about winter road care, environmental impacts and best management practices. This improves communication and understanding of this complicated situation. The chronic standard for chloride is 230 mg/l which is equivalent to one teaspoon of salt in a five-gallon bucket of water.
